Oliver Cromwell. His Highness By the Grace of God and Republic, Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland.

Posted on 16:13 by Unknown
The Lord Protector, Cromwell, his sword impaling three crowns, tramples monstrous Faction and Error and the Whore of Babylon underfoot. Over his head the Greek motto proclaims ‘Belief in One God’. On the right the three kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland offer him wreaths. The small scenes at the top and bottom exemplify proverbs on the theme of the peace-maker, and the dove carries aloft an olive branch—a pun on ‘Oliver’.
